The defending World Series champion is also close to acquiring Houston Astros right-hander Jake Odorridge, a source told ESPN's Jeff Passan, confirming multiple reports.
Grossman, 32, was not in Monday night's lineup as the Tigers lost 5-3 to the Minnesota Twins. 205, 2 homers and 23 RBIs in 83 games this season.
"I had a lot of fun playing for the Tigers & it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to, but it's part of the business & I'm on next chapter of my baseball career," Grossman said.
Detroit acquired Chris Anglin, a pitcher in Atlanta's minor league system, in exchange for Grossman, who played outfield in both corners of Detroit this season.
Backup pitcher Will Smith will go to Houston on a deal for Odrizzi, 32, who started Sunday in the Astros' 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The veteran allowed 2 hits and scoreless 7 against Seattle. He posted a season-high 8 innings and went scoreless through four.
To make Grossman's place on the list, Atlanta infielder Mike Ford chose his Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett, Georgia.
